Abortion is the intentional termination of pregnancy before the fetus is viable outside of the womb. Spontaneous termination of the pregnancy is usually termed as miscarriage. Pregnancies are decided to be terminated for many reasons. Some are terminated as they are undesired. Some are terminated to save the life of the mother.

If it is carried out by systematic measures, abortion is a safe procedure. Records show that abortion is safer than baring a child. However, without rational reasons, intentional abortion is illegal. There are several thousands of abortion cases each year all over the world, but, half of them are done by unsafe procedures illegally.

Therapeutic abortion can be done safely in abortion clinics using medications or surgical methods. But in undeveloped areas, abortions are being carried out using herbal medicines, sharp tools or pushing down the womb by force. As a consequence, the mothers have to suffer from several complications such as sepsis, uterine prolapse. Due to unsafe abortion, the mother had to die in several cases.

Though abortion is legalized for therapeutic reasons, there is loud debate and controversies about it. The fetal heart in the womb starts to work since the third month of pregnancy and the fetus is safely viable outside of the womb if it is given to birth after the 27th week of pregnancy. Therefore, a fetus in the womb cannot be regarded as a lifeless piece of flesh. The fetus also has the right to be alive.

Sex abuses, sexual violence and lack of sex education are major causes of the increased abortion rate. Family planning and reproductive education are the best tools to avoid abortion. To avoid undesired conception, contraceptive methods such as pills, barriers or implants can be used. Accidental conception can also be terminated by taking emergency pills.

However, if someone becomes pregnant undesirably, the embryo should be allowed to be alive as it is innocent. As Wai-La sang in one of his famous songs(lu phyit khwng pay pr), let it be a human. It should not be aborted without strong rationales.
